New measures are being introduced to help cut down the waiting times for learner drivers keen to take their driving test. As it stands in spring 2025, the average wait time is around 22 weeks due to a significant backlog, with some centres experiencing waits of up to 24 weeks.

On November 12, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander provided an update to the Transport Select Committee (TSC) on steps being taken to prevent exploitation of learner drivers and reduce driving test waiting times. She announced that the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will be altering the booking service so that only learner car drivers can book and manage their tests.
