MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Nov. 12, 1836, the territorial governor of Wisconsin, Henry Dodge, signed the first law passed by the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature.
The law prescribed how legislators were to behave and how other citizens were to behave toward legislators.
One thing the law authorized was that the Assembly could punish any citizen found guilty of disrespect, disorderly behavior, or threats in the Legislature.
Legislators could also be thrown out of the Assembly based on a two-thirds majority in either house.
This law did not stop lawmakers from getting into arguments, or even physical fights.
Wisconsin would go on to become a state eight years later, in 1848.
