NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE - Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced new sanctions against Russia today while hosting diplomats from the Group of Seven (G7) nations. The sanctions specifically target individuals and entities involved in Russia's drone and cyberattacks on Ukraine, as well as ships operating within Russia's sanctions-evading shadow fleet.
During the meeting, G7 foreign ministers will hear from Ukraine's foreign minister regarding the ongoing Russian assaults on Ukraine's power grid. These attacks have resulted in rolling blackouts across Ukraine as winter approaches, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation have stalled, adding urgency to the discussions.
In addition to G7 members, Anand has invited representatives from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and South Korea to participate in the two-day summit. The agenda includes discussions on critical minerals, energy security, and economic resilience, particularly in light of the protectionist policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, which have unsettled traditional alliances.
The meeting underscores the international community's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by Russia's actions in Ukraine and the broader implications for global security and cooperation.
