In response to former San Mateo Councilmember Rick Bonilla’s urging for broader and stronger tenant protections readers should be aware that Assembly Bill 1482, The Tenant Protection Act of 2019, signed into law by Gov. Newsom provided some of the strongest tenant protections in the country. This landmark law was the result of lengthy and intense negotiations between tenant advocacy groups, housing providers and state officials. As with all compromises, no party got everything they wanted.

The never-ending lobbying for yet more tenant protections only makes providing housing more expensive. Hopefully, the San Mateo City Council will understand the implications of yet another round of housing regulations and vote them down.
