LEXINGTON, Ky. — A teachers union in Kentucky’s second-largest district is asking the school board to use district property as a place for families living in their cars to sleep overnight.

The president of AFT-120 is asking Fayette County Public Schools to establish a "Safe Sleep Lots" program for district families facing homelessness.

“The basics would be FCPS families that have nowhere to sleep and are currently sleeping in their cars could possibly use some FCPS property to plug in, have safety for the night in a possibly fenced in area," said Laura Hartke, an organizer with AFT-120.

Hartke said the program would mirror an approach taking place in Cincinnati Public Schools and would be a temporary location as families await more permanent help.
