A major grocery store chain is tackling a national penny shortage by launching a special event that allows customers to turn their spare change into double the value.
Market 32 and Price Chopper announced a one-day event, titled “Double Exchange Day,” which will take place on Nov. 16 in all of its northeast locations from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to Progressive Grocer .
The stores are located in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
During the event, a penny will be worth two cents when shoppers exchange them for a gift card under either banner for twice the coins’ total amount, meaning $10 in pennies could earn a $20 gift card redeemable towards future in-store purchases, the media outlet explained.
