After three years of lackluster snowfall, meteorologists say the Pittsburgh region could be in for a snowier winter with slightly warmer-than-average temperatures.
Last winter season, the official snowfall total for Pittsburgh International Airport came in at about 10 inches below the average of 42 inches.
But even that below-normal mark was more than the combined totals from the prior two winters, when there were 16.3 and 17.6 inches, said Andrew Kienzle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Moon.
Snowfall totals were notably below average over the past three years due to temperatures and the track of storm systems were unfavorable for snow.
But an expected cold start to the winter could make for a different story this season.
