GRESHAM, Ore. (KPTV) - While homelessness has increased by 67% in Multnomah County over the past two years, the city of Gresham has seen its unsheltered population drop by 74% in the last decade.
On any given day, fewer than 40 people live unsheltered in Gresham, down from 138 in 2015, according to a new point-in-time count from Portland State University released last week.
The decrease is largely attributed to the Gresham Homeless Services Team, a four-person group of specialists who serve as the first point of contact for anyone experiencing homelessness in the city.
“I see the impact that we have here every single day with people and it’s beautiful, we are giving livability to the city, and we are helping people,” said Willie Shaw, a senior homeless services provider for the city.
