A pilot project in Timmins to add extra security to an area of the city that has a shelter and homeless encampment will not continue.
This fall, city council hired security guards to patrol a neighbourhood in the south end of the city, where residents have been police and city hall about increased violence, vandalism and open drug use.
The security company did almost 700 patrols in the overnight hours, and 27 incidents were logged, four of which required police assistance.
"The site itself is unsafe. Fire department is there almost daily and regularly attending to remove flammable materials, propane tanks, I mean, people there, they've got a they've gotta create some warmth," said the city's chief administrative officer Dave Landers.
