The Chattanooga Area Food Bank released data detailing a sharp increase in need for food assistance amid the government shutdown.
As Tennessee and Georgia begin issuing partial SNAP benefits to residents, many government employees are still without pay. The lack of pay and food stamp benefits leaves many citizens heading to their local food bank.
Impact on local food banks
Data from the first week of SNAP disruptions revealed it was the first food bank visit for one out of five households at the Foxwood Food Center in Chattanooga. That center also served 54% more households and 68% more children than the same week in 2024.
The food bank's partners across Southeast Tennessee have also seen double-digit increases in need.
Red Bank Community Pantry served 52% more families.
