LINCOLN, Neb. —

Lincoln police said a 45-year-old man took his own life in the back of a police cruiser.

The in-custody suicide happened Sunday night around 8. Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow said officers followed policy with handcuffs, but missed a gun.

Officers were considering taking Eleazar Oceguera into protective custody for mental health, officials said.

According to Lincoln police, officers were interviewing witnesses and couldn't see Oceguera in the back of the dark vehicle as he moved his handcuffs from behind his back to his front.

That's when he shot himself, according to officials.

The officer whose cruiser this happened in is on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

The case will go in front of a grand jury.
