Taking part in British Council NI’s climate simulation negotiation at Belfast Castle, the students experienced what it’s like to negotiate a global climate deal.
During the event – held in parallel with COP30 taking place in Belém, Brazil – pupils acted as delegates from major nations, corporate lobbyists, and international media representatives working to keep global warming below 1.5C.
Participants had to collectively agree how much to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, how to support developing nations, and how to adapt to the effects of climate change to protect people worldwide.
Leading the negotiations were pupils Blaithin Mohan and Niamh Cullen from St Catherine’s College Armagh, who took on the role of the United Nations Secretariat.
