A 19-year-old man from Wynantskill was killed when a vehicle caught fire in a residential driveway,
The fire broke out shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, on Judd Lane in Wynantskill, according to North Greenbush Police.
A passerby saw a vehicle fully engulfed in flames, called 911, and tried using a garden hose to put out the fire before realizing someone was trapped underneath.
Emergency crews from the Wynantskill and Defreestville Fire Departments, along with North Greenbush Ambulance, responded to the scene and pulled the victim from beneath the vehicle.
Police determined he was already deceased before help arrived. His name has not yet been released pending notification of family.
Investigators are still working to determine how the fire started and how the victim became trapped. Police said foul play is not suspected at this time, police said.
“This is a terribly tragic situation, and our hearts go out to his family and friends,” said North Greenbush Police Chief David Keevern. “The response from all emergency services was exceptional, as always, but sadly, it was not enough to save him.”
Keevern added that the Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety and the Rensselaer County Cause and Origin Investigation Team are assisting in the investigation.
Rensselaer County Public Safety Director Jay Wilson also expressed condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends as they cope with this tragic incident.”
