Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has said that his relationship with President Donald Trump “will be critical to the success of the city.”

Mamdani in an exclusive interview with NBC New York also said that he plans to call Trump before taking office on Jan. 1.

Mamdani said that be believes that as the next mayor, he must work collaboratively with adversaries and not wait until it’s too late to avoid consequences for its people.

While not saying what would prompt him to call the White House once he’s in City Hall, Mamdani said that he would be “proactive” in trying to stymie Trump’s tough policies on immigration and crime.
