Scores of former service members and community members gathered at Fruita’s Western Slope Vietnam Memorial on Tuesday morning to recognize Veterans Day, in an event marked by speeches, tributes and the unveiling of a new statue.

Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Deputy Executive Director Myk Bruno gave the day’s keynote speech, where he recognized still-living veterans at the event and across the nation.

“Veterans Day is not just a day on the calendar, it is a day of reflection, of solemn promise, and of deep personal gratitude,” he said. “We honor the men and women who took the oath to protect and defend our Constitution, who faced the terror of conflict, and who came home to continue leading lives of service.”
