Pittsburgh-based steelmaking giant U.S. Steel, the owner of Big River Steel Works in Osceola, plans to build a new metals plant at the Big River site as part of the company's plan to invest $11 billion in its domestic operations by 2028, a U.S. Steel spokesperson confirmed to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Wednesday.
Amanda Malkowski, a spokeswoman for U.S. Steel, declined to elaborate on the size of the investment or the number of jobs created. A similar Nucor plant in Louisiana cost an estimated $750 million when it went online in 2013.
"This investment highlights our partnership with Nippon Steel as we collaborate to execute impactful projects. More detailed information will be shared as the project progresses," Malkowski said in a statement.
