ABBEVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - South Carolina Congresswoman Sherri Biggs introduced a bill that would posthumously award one of the nation’s highest civilian honors to a World War II hero from Abbeville.
Major Thomas D. Howie, often remembered as “The Major of St. Lo,” was in the Battle of Normandy and was killed in action on July 17, 1944, while leading his battalion during the fierce battle to liberate Saint-Lô, France.
Biggs said, “This Veterans Day, we honor every man and woman who’s worn the uniform; especially the proud veterans of South Carolina’s Third District. Major Howie’s bravery at Normandy reflects the very best of them. This medal is a tribute to his sacrifice and to all who’ve served.”
