When army veteran Garth Murray first set out to walk around Australia for charity with his assistance dog, Max, he had no idea he would have the police called on them in regional South Australia.
Since setting out in 2024 from Queensland, Mr Murray said he had encountered relatively few instances of discrimination, but has had to employ tactics to counter what he calls "covert" discrimination.
Mr Murray, who lives with severe anxiety as a result of his 15 years with the Australian Defence Force, said he will often leave Max outside while he secures accommodation to ensure businesses do not falsely claim to have no availability, or attempt to put them in a "lesser room" when they see his assistance dog.
