A second night of aurora borealis is expected across parts of the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on Wednesday evening, following a vivid display on Tuesday that reached as far south as Alabama and New Mexico. The spectacle stems from a series of powerful solar eruptions triggering a severe geomagnetic storm.
What to Know:
NOAA has issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch —the second-highest level —due to three recent solar ejections.
The third and strongest CME is forecast to arrive midday Wednesday, intensifying aurora activity .
Clear skies are expected in Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, southern Michigan, and possibly parts of the central and southern U.S.
Tuesday’s aurora produced red and green lights visible across much of the country, with oxygen and nitrogen creating the colors.
