There were a few ground rules when Vancouver launched its search for a new city flag earlier this year: Keep it simple, avoid lettering and seals, use meaningful symbolism and no more than three colors, be distinctive, and connect to Vancouver’s location, natural beauty, history and future.
The city’s new flag, approved by a unanimous city council vote Monday night, checks all of these boxes and more.
“Our new flag is a powerful reflection of who we are as a city,” Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle said in a news release. “It represents our natural surroundings, the iconic places that define Vancouver and the creativity that makes our community special. This flag truly tells the story of a community on the rise.”
