CLEVELAND, Ohio — Authorities released the identity of a Cleveland man who died after running back into his burning West Side home in an attempt to save his pets.

The Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office on Wednesday identified the victim as Jerred Dickens Sr., 45.

Fire crews responded to Dickens’ home just before midnight after receiving a call from his mother, who reported that both she and her son had escaped the fire but that he ran back inside to save his cats and dogs, fire officials said.

Firefighters found Dickens inside the burning home and pulled him out. Both he and his mother were transported to MetroHealth Medical Center, where Dickens later died.
