GRAND FORKS — A dazzling northern lights display was the talk of the region Wednesday morning after a rare, powerful solar storm put on a show across the United States.
There were even reports of aurora sightings as far south as Tampa, Florida, according to Mike Bettwy, operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center.
In the Grand Forks area, countless social media posts marveled at the red of the aurora, not commonly visible at these latitudes — especially not to the naked eye.
The lights are the result of three coronal mass ejections from the sun, the third of which was expected to impact Earth's atmosphere Wednesday, according to Bettwy. On Wednesday afternoon, he predicted that the aurora Wednesday night could be just as impactful as the night before, at least until activity
