A powerful G4 geomagnetic storm could make the northern lights visible as far south as Alabama.

The best chance to see the aurora is typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. in a dark location away from city lights.

If the clouds part, New Hampshire and Maine could get a spectacular glimpse of the northern lights tonight, Nov. 12.

While partly cloudy skies could hamper viewing on the Seacoast , the effects of the strongest solar storm of the year are expected to continue to light up the sky on Nov. 12, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center . All of New Hampshire and Maine are once again the view line.

Tonight, "aurora may be seen as low as Alabama and northern California," an alert said.
