JANESVILLE, Wis. — New infrastructure said to create hundreds of jobs is coming to Janesville.

After a nearly three-hour-long city council meeting on Monday, Janesville city officials approved a letter of intent for a new data center. The proposal was passed by a vote of five to two.

A data center is a facility that stores large amounts of networking and computing servers. The Janesville data center is set to bring more than 600 jobs to the area.

The approval is just the first step for the development of the data center by Colorado-based company Viridian Acquisitions.

The deal could be worth up to $8 billion and is said to be looking at revamping the former General Motors plant site. That area has been vacant since 2008 after General Motors went bankrupt.
