Director of Natural Resources David J. DeConto announced that after 10 years in the works, a portion of Scorton Creek will be opening to shellfishing this season.
The Select Board approved reopening the shellfish beds during a meeting held on November 6.
DeConto said that he has been quietly working on opening the shellfish beds at Scorton Creek and that the state's Division of Marine Fisheries recently gave the “green light” to open them this year.
“It's not the whole creek. It's going to be down from Craven’s Landing...toward the bridge—just the first couple of turns,” DeConto said. “It's a huge, huge win for the town because Marine Fisheries does not just open up beds anymore; there’s a concern with their resources.”
