A student was caught trying to smuggle a loaded handgun into a Newark school and taken into custody Wednesday morning, according to city police.

Newark officers were called to the Great Oaks Legacy Charter School on Crawford Street around 9:06 a.m. Wednesday after the discovery was reported to authorities, Newark police spokesperson Catherine Adams told NJ Advance Media.

The student, a 17-year-old boy, was attempting to pass the firearm through a checkpoint, triggering an alert from the metal detector, which security personnel responded to. The gun was then removed from the student’s possession after security used a wand on the book bag, Adams said.
