Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz entered a plea of not guilty to the charges filed by federal prosecutors related to a sports gambling scheme that also involves closer Emmanuel Clase .
Ortiz and Clase are each facing up to 65 years in prison for their alleged roles in the scheme that, according to the 23-page indictment , involved gamblers winning fraudulent bets due to both pitchers purposefully throwing balls in certain situations. Both are facing a series of charges that include wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, among others.
Ortiz, on Nov. 12, entered his plea of not guilty in Brooklyn federal court and was released on $500,000 bond with GPS monitoring.
