It has been a rough sophomore season for Michael Penix Jr. in Atlanta.

The Falcons went all-in this offseason by trading their 2026 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams to load up their defense while expecting a breakout offensive year from the quarterback they took in the first round in 2024.

Instead, it's been an abject disaster: the 3-6 Falcons currently sit in the 10th position in the 2026 draft, with that pick belonging to the surging Rams. Penix Jr. is completing less than 60% of his passes and has struggled to find a rhythm in a Falcons offense that has been one of the most stagnant schemes in football.

When asked today who he has to lean on during these trying times, he was honest: nobody, aside from his fiancée at home.

"Physically, with the on-the-field stuff, there's nobody," he said. "…I do have people who reach out to me. I do have quarterback coaches back at home who reach out to me as well."

Penix Jr. did not mention his defensive-minded head coach, Raheem Morris, or the offensive coordinator Morris brought with him from L.A., Zac Robinson. While both were part of the Rams team that has been atop the offensive charts for the past decade, Sean McVay is the primary caller on the team, with the O.C. acting more as an assistant.

It is another indictment of a Falcons franchise that hasn't found its footing since losing to the New England Patriots in the 2017 Super Bowl. Since franchise legend Matt Ryan left, it's been a revolving door at quarterback, with Penix Jr. seen as the one to inherit the franchise finally.

As the season continues towards its endpoint and the Falcons sit without a first-round pick, we will continue to keep an eye on the developing story down south.
