One person was killed Tuesday night after being hit by a car on Route 9 in Atlantic County, police said.

Police responded to the intersection of Route 9 and California Avenue in Absecon just after 7:38 p.m. for a report of a person fatally struck by a car, police said.

The driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators, police said. Traffic in the area was interrupted for about five hours Tuesday night.

Details about the victim’s name, age and hometown were not released.

The Absecon Police Department’s traffic safety unit and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the crash. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Patrolman Joseph Akeret at 609-641-0667, ext. 214.
