Police arrested a driver today accused of speeding at more than 200km/h through southern Melbourne.

Officers were alerted to the white Holden Commodore in the back streets of Brighton about 1.30am.

The car was allegedly spotted driving at more than 200km/h on the Nepean Highway before it entered a carpark on Jamieson Street in Cheltenham where the occupants left the vehicle.

Police searched the area and arrested the driver, a 44-year-old Melbourne man.

Officers found on him a key allegedly belonging to the Holden and a quantity of drugs.

Police also searched the car and seized a machete, a balaclava, housebreaking implements and an electronic device often used to gain access to and steal vehicles.
