New Mexico residents can look forward to another chance to see the Northern Lights tonight , with experts suggesting the display could be even more incredible than Tuesday night.
Last night, shades of red, pink, and green filled the New Mexico sky, with many KOAT viewers sharing gorgeous photos and videos of the northern lights.
Simply put, the beautiful phenomenon is caused by the sun .
"Yesterday, the sun experienced a very large flare. And a flare is an explosive event that happens in the atmosphere of the sun," said Jason Jaciewicz, an astronomy professor at New Mexico State University.
The flare consists of energetic particles from the sun that use solar wind to float through space, eventually colliding with Earth's magnetic field.
