AUSTIN, Texas — Austin City Council’s Thursday meeting to discuss an updated city budget was canceled after allegations the city violated the Texas Open Meetings Act.
The city council has to pass a new budget after voters rejected Proposition Q ’s tax rate increase last week.
On Wednesday, local attorneys said they believed that a notice for Thursday’s meeting violated the Texas Open Meetings Act. They argue the city did not include a link to the proposed budget and an updated taxpayer impact statement.
A spokesperson for the city said the Austin City Attorney's Office believed the notice was posted correctly and met all legal requirements. They said their goal with the budget is to restore trust in the city, so they're willing to take additional steps to achieve that goal.
