MUSKEGON, Mich. — The City of Muskegon has filed a lawsuit seeking clarification on a voter-approved charter amendment that imposes 12-year term limits on City Commission members, officials announced.
The city filed the lawsuit Nov. 11, one week after voters approved the charter amendment limiting commissioners to 12 years in office. The measure passed alongside the re-election of Mayor Ken Johnson and Commissioner Rebecca St. Clair, and the election of newcomer Kiley Jackson to the commission.
City officials said the new charter language is subject to multiple interpretations and filed suit asking the court to rule on three key questions.
The city wants the court to confirm that all prior service on the commission counts toward the 12-year limit, not just time served after November 202
