South Australia ‘s Legislative Council have voted on a controversial bill on Wednesday — the second attempt in just over a year to restrict late-term abortions, with the bill failing again to pass the Upper House.

Independent MP Sarah Game, formerly of One Nation, introduced legislation that would tighten access after 22 weeks and six days.

It follows a similar bill from Ben Hood, Liberal Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), which was defeated 10–9 last September.

Under current law, abortion after 22 weeks and six days is permitted if two doctors agree it is necessary. Only 1 per cent of abortions in SA fall into this category.

Game’s bill would allow terminations after that point only in cases of serious foetal anomaly or to save the life of the pregnant woman or another foetus.
