The San Francisco 49ers might be the unluckiest team over the past two years since their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but they might be getting help at just the right time.
Per a report by NBC Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, starting quarterback Brock Purdy is in line to start for San Francisco this weekend against divisional rival Arizona if everything goes as planned.
Purdy has only played two games this season with a toe injury that occurred during the opening contest of the season against the Seattle Seahawks. He returned to action only a few short weeks later in Jacksonville, but returned too soon, throwing two interceptions and then sitting on the sidelines for all of October and into November.
Mac Jones did well in the backup role for Purdy and even looked like he might create a bit of controversy at times, but he's regressed as the season has gone on, as the 49ers are fighting tooth and nail for a postseason spot.
Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 draft out of Iowa State, Brock Purdy rose in the ranks in San Francisco and solidified himself as the franchise's leader under center. After a 23-12 record in the regular season as a quarterback and a trip to the Super Bowl, he signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with San Francisco in May of this year.
With the Super Bowl this season held at the home of the 49ers in the Bay Area, the return of Purdy is essential for the team to have a shot at making it back home come February.
