A man is fighting for life after he was attacked with a machete at a Melbourne car wash.

The 43-year-old was at Elite Car Wash on Mount Alexander Rd in Essendon when another car pulled up at the entrance about 9am on Thursday.

A random man armed with a machete approached the victim and slashed his hand.

The victim tried to run away but the offender attacked him again with the machete.

The offender fled in his car, leaving the victim for dead.

He was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
