Bozeman High’s Miles Halvorsen hadn’t thought much about running in college until just about a year ago.

He placed seventh at the state cross country meet and, a few weeks later, ran a 5K personal-record time of 15 minutes, 41.7 seconds at the Nike Cross Regional race — results that convinced him to test the waters. He started reaching out to college coaches, but they wanted to see some faster times. They wanted to see what he did in cross country as a senior.

“That kind of lit a fire under me,” Halvorsen said, “and I said, ‘I'm just gonna put it all out there and see how fast I can go.’”

Wearing a Colorado State sweatshirt Wednesday at his official signing ceremony, he smiled as he recounted how his dream of collegiate running grew and how good it felt to see it realized.
