TYLER, Texas — Hundreds of demonstrators filled the streets of downtown Tyler, voicing frustration over local participation in a federal immigration enforcement program and calling for change.

The protest centered around the Smith County Sheriff’s Office’s involvement in the federal 287-G immigration enforcement program, which allows local law enforcement to collaborate with federal immigration authorities.

“This community is waking up,” Democratic chair of Smith County Hector Garza said. “People are out here speaking their minds, and the Latino community is saying they won’t stand for it.”

Protesters held signs and chanted “No more ICE” and “Abbott’s got to go,” their voices carrying down Broadway Avenue — loud enough to be heard from inside the governor’s campaign event.
