A killer who dumped his housemate's body in a wheelie bin tried in vain to avoid coming to court, refusing to board the prison van.

An extra van needed to be chartered to ensure Stephen Fleming was brought to the Supreme Court of Victoria for sentencing, where, after some delay, he was forced to face the family of his victim, Annette Brennan.

Fleming covered his face to avoid being photographed when the van arrived at the court, and once inside, he sat slumped forward in the dock.

It was the second time he had tried to dodge a court hearing after claiming in September that prison guards failed to collect him.
