Two grocery stores in the Northeast have asked customers for pennies and are willing to give them their two cents.
Market 32 and Price Chopper announced that customers who return pennies during a “Double Exchange Day” on Nov. 16 will receive a gift card worth double the value of the now-discontinued coins, according to a Nov. 10 news release .
Customers can bring either rolled or loose pennies to the customer service desk at either supermarket to receive a gift card issued on the spot. To qualify for a $1 card, they must bring at least 50 cents. The promotion has a limit of $100, allowing for a gift card worth $200.
The company cited the shrinking supply of the one-cent coin as a challenge in making change for cash-paying customers.
