TOLEDO, Ohio — A plate of pasta could soon cost Americans a little more dough.
The Trump administration is considering adding a new import tax on pasta from Italy . The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed a 92% anti-dumping duty on Italian-made pasta, a trade penalty meant to stop foreign companies from selling products below market value in the United States.
If approved, the total import taxes on Italian pasta could climb to more than 100%, potentially raising prices for consumers.
But in Toledo, some restaurant owners say they won’t feel the squeeze.
George Mancy, owner of Mancy’s Italian Grill, says his business sources its pasta locally and even makes some in-house.
“It’s not going to affect us,” Mancy said. “We source our pasta locally out of Michigan and Canton, Ohio.”
