ACT Policing is investigating allegations against the Canberra coach whose appointment was blocked by the governing body .

The Canberra Times can reveal the police were investigating an alleged incident involving Ashley Barnes that occurred at a licensed club in Civic in September last year.

It comes after the Woden Valley Rams signed Barnes as head coach for the 2026 Canberra Raiders Cup season - only for the NSW Rugby League to step in and prevent him from being registered.

Barnes' appointment caused a split, with the Rams' Katrina Fanning Shield team considering moving to another club because of it.

In the end they decided to stay, but it's unclear whether the NSWRL's move to prevent Barnes' appointment will stop players from leaving.
