Gilroy has temporarily prohibited the issuance of new tobacco retailer permits Monday, following concerns from the community.
The action comes after the city witnessed a noticeable increase in new smoke shops, with three opening since 2024, according to officials.
Authorities said while the city currently has 50 active tobacco retailer permits, about 0.9 retailers per 1,000 residents, most are located within grocery, liquor or convenience stores. They add the stand-alone smoke shops has raised concerns about community health, youth exposure and the overall appearance of commercial areas.
