LOGAN – I went to see Richard Thomas in the touring revival of Mark Twain Tonight! at the Ellen Eccles Theatre on Nov. 12 pretty confident that no one would be able to perform of the role of the beloved humorist with the same charm and panache as the late Hal Holbrook.

I was right and wrong simultaneously.

Recognizing that he couldn’t fill Holbrook’s shoes, Thomas didn’t even try. Instead he created his own interpretation of Mark Twain and convincingly sold that vision to the appreciative Cache Valley audience.

I was lucky enough to have seen one of Holbrook’s live performances years ago – the gifted actor indelibly portrayed the role of Mark Twain more than 2,300 times over 63 consecutive years starting in 1956.
