Police in Ntchisi on Wednesday night fired tear gas to disperse students at Ntchisi Secondary School who attempted to confront a man suspected of theft.

Reports indicate that chaos erupted after students accused an unidentified man of stealing clothes and other personal belongings from their hostels. The suspect is said to have sought refuge in one of the boys’ dormitories as students pursued him.

According to some students who spoke to media, they informed police about the situation, prompting officers to rush to the school where they used tear gas to restore order.

The incident left several students fleeing from their hostels as smoke filled the school premises.

Ntchisi Police spokesperson Salomy Zgambo confirmed the incident, saying the situation has since been brought under control
