Rhamondre Stevenson started the first eight games of the season for the New England Patriots and was the team's clear-cut backfield leader during that stretch.
However, the Oklahoma product suffered a toe injury in the team's Week 8 win over the Cleveland Browns. He hasn't played since, and he won't be on the field for the team's Week 11 game against the New York Jets on "Thursday Night Football."
When will Stevenson return? Here are the latest injury updates on the veteran running back and when New England can expect to see him back on the field.
When will Rhamondre Stevenson return?
The Patriots have not provided a concrete timetable for Stevenson's return, though he was ruled out for the Patriots' Week 11 game against the Jets because of a toe injury. It will mark the third consecutive game the 27-year-old running back has missed because of the ailment.
The good news? Stevenson managed to get back on the practice field. He was a "limited" participant at Monday and Tuesday's practices before being downgraded to a non-participant at Wednesday's session, per the Patriots' official injury report.
By comparison, Stevenson failed to participate in practice in any capacity ahead of his team's games against the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel did not provide specifics about Stevenson's progress when asked about it – in tandem with the health of fellow running back Terrell Jennings, who suffered a knee injury in Week 10 – during a Monday media availability.
"Terrell's being evaluated and we'll see where he is," Vrabel said, per a team transcript. "Again, today's walkthrough, we'll try to do our best with the injury report. We'll see what he's able to do. I would say the same with all those guys that weren't available for the game yesterday, I think that they're working extremely hard and I think that they – we'll see what they can do with the walkthrough. They'll probably do a little bit more and then we'll try to evaluate so that we can make some decisions for the game."
Stevenson has generated 279 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 83 carries across eight games. Next up for him will be seeing if he can get healthy for a Week 12 clash with a weak Cincinnati Bengals defense.
Patriots RB depth chart
The Patriots have just three running backs on their 53-man roster. Below is the typical pecking order within that unit.
- Rhamondre Stevenson (injured)
- TreVeyon Henderson
- Terrell Jennings
With Stevenson out and Jennings questionable for Thursday's game against the Jets, Henderson figures to take on a lion's share of the snaps at running back. The second-round rookie is coming off a breakout game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, during which he had 147 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
The Patriots are also expected to call up D'Ernest Johnson from the practice squad for a third consecutive game, so the veteran can serve as the team's third-string runner again. They could also call up one of Rushawn Baker or Jonathan Ward to provide more depth if they are worried about Jennings' availability.
