FRISCO, Texas — Brian Schottenheimer is normally the same man when he meets the media.
He smiles. He’s confident. He gives expansive answers. He cusses from time to time.
It doesn’t matter if the team is struggling or doing well. Schottenheimer has said it’s important to be your “authentic self.” Never change.
Wednesday was a contrast for the Dallas Cowboys head coach, as he spoke at his first news conference since the tragic loss of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland.
“I’m hurting,” he said.
Kneeland, 24, took his own life last Thursday after a police pursuit, less than a mile from The Star in Frisco where the Cowboys practice.
Schottenheimer held back tears, speaking softly at times. He presented the look of a man searching for answers.
