WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old was arrested and charged as an adult in connection with six carjackings and a robbery in D.C. over the summer, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Thursday.

The carjackings happened over a period of five days -- between June 8 and 12 -- and were carried out in the Northwest, Northeast and Southeast quadrants of the District.

In their release, the MPD named the 17-year-old as Andre Whitfield of Southeast D.C. in a rare identification of an underage suspect by the department. Under Title 16 of the D.C. Code, 16 and 17-year-olds can be charged as adults for certain crimes.

Police said Whitfield was "involved" with the crimes and that the department was still looking for more suspects.
