ALLENDALE, Mich. — At Grand Valley State University, the athletic director and the softball coach have a lot in common.

Keri Becker and Dana Callihan were former softball rivals in high school. They coached at rival universities.

And they both have battled breast cancer.

"You just have to be ready for anything and be able to fight back and have a pretty strong team," said Callihan, head softball coach at GVSU.

In 2016, Callihan had a suspicious spot found during a routine mammogram.

"Three days later was a biopsy and cancer diagnosis," said Callihan.

She caught her breast cancer early, had surgery a month later, and began two months of chemotherapy.

"It was something I handled very privately," said Callihan. "Keri knew, my assistant coach knew, but beyond that, it was just my family
