A 36-year-old Chinese man who hoped to make a positive impression on his girlfriend’s parents by losing weight has died following gastric bypass surgery, a tragedy now prompting his family to question whether adequate medical assessments and timely intervention were carried out.

A Weight-Loss Decision Driven by Hope

Known by the pseudonym Li Jiang, the man from Henan’s Xinxiang city stood 174 cm tall and weighed over 130 kg. After years of struggling with obesity, Li chose to undergo bariatric surgery ahead of an important family meeting tied to his relationship.

“He wanted to slim down before meeting her parents… he was preparing for marriage,” his brother shared.

Surgery Successful, but Sudden Decline Follows
